Every week we meet guests at Kilimanjaro airport wrestling hard-shell suitcases that will spend the safari wedged sideways in the back of a Land Cruiser. Packing for the bush is simpler than packing for almost any other trip — if you know the three rules.
Rule one: soft bags only
Safari vehicles and light aircraft have tight, irregular luggage space, and internal flights typically cap luggage at 15 kg in soft duffels. One duffel plus a small daypack for the vehicle is the entire correct answer.
Rule two: neutral layers, not outfits
Mornings on the crater rim are genuinely cold; middays on the plains are hot. You dress in layers you shed as the sun climbs. Khaki, olive, and stone colours stay cooler, hide dust, and do not bother the wildlife. Skip dark blue and black — tsetse flies love them.
- 3–4 lightweight shirts (long sleeves double as sun protection)
- 2 trousers or convertibles, 1 pair of shorts
- A warm fleece or down layer for dawn drives
- A light rain shell in the green season
- A brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen
- Comfortable broken-in shoes — no need for boots unless trekking
Rule three: the small things matter most
- Binoculars — one pair per person, the most underrated item on this list
- Power bank and your camera’s spare batteries (vehicles charge, lodges vary)
- A headlamp for tented camps
- Any prescription medication in your hand luggage
- A copy of your passport and insurance details, separate from the originals
What to leave behind
Camouflage clothing (restricted for civilians in Tanzania), drones (banned in the national parks), hair dryers (camps run on solar), and anything you would be upset to get dusty. Laundry is available at almost every camp — pack for four days, whatever the trip length.
